Ayurveda is based on the three doshas of Vata, Kapha, and Pitta. The system of Ayurveda views each symptom as a result of the change of balance between the doshas. Each person has a body that is more inclined to one of these doshas. Aging and menopause are a transition to the Vata phase of life. This change in the dosha balance is what causes the symptoms of menopause. The Dosha type of the person before this phase of life determines the nature and intensity of the symptoms.
According to Ayurveda, Ama is the metabolic waste that is generated by the body when there is improper or incomplete digestion. This Ama should ideally be avoided by fully and efficiently digesting the food. When there is a presence of Ama in the body it adds to the intensity of the peri-menopausal symptoms. Stress and overthinking also aggravate problems. Ayurveda recommends that a diet that aggravates Vata should be avoided. One must eat a healthy diet of fresh and unprocessed food to keep the digestive process efficient and avoid the formation of Ama. Heavy foods that are hard to digest should be avoided especially at night. A regular meal schedule is to be followed. Sleep and adequate rest are very important to avoid aggravating anxiety and stress-related issues. Enough rest should be taken during menstruation. Regular and gentle exercise is beneficial.
